Sports Scores of 1969
Great Sports Scores of 1969: New York Jets 16, Indianapolis 7
This is not only one of the great sports scores of 1969, it’s one of the greatest sports scores of all time. Super Bowl III, the first one to actually be called the Super Bowl, has been referred to by many as “the game that changed pro football. For it was this year, that once again, an NFL powerhouse was expected to defeat a weaker AFL team. However, it was this year, that a rebellious young quarterback from the University of Alabama named Joe Namath guaranteed a victory for the AFL and his New York Jets squad, and it was this year that he delivered. After this game, the AFL finally had legitimacy, and the next year, the two leagues merged, to become the NFL we all know today.
Great Sports Scores of 1969: Montreal Canadiens 4, St. Louis Blues 0
The St. Louis Blues once again found themselves on the wrong end of sports scores of 1969 when they returned to the Stanley Cup Final for a rematch with the Montreal Canadiens. The Blues knew they were more talented than the previous year’s final, a 4-0 sweep, indicated, and that if a few pucks had bounced another way, they would have been the champions. The year 1969 provided an opportunity for redemption for the Blues. Sadly, the result was not just the same, it was worse. The Blues were swept again, this time decisively, losing 3-1, 3-1, 4-0 and 2-1.
Great Sports Scores of 1969: New York Mets 4, Baltimore 1
There’s no doubt that the great sports scores of 1969 were especially great for fans of New York underdogs. While the New York Giants and New York Yankees enjoyed victories and accolades year after year, the Jets and Mets were always relegated to “second team” status. But 1969 was their year to shine. It’s hard to know which winner was more unlikely, the Jets, or the 1969 Mets, who had joined the league only seven years earlier and had never even had a winning record before 1969. Nevertheless, the “Miracle Mets” earned their nickname, and went on to put away the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles in a mere five games.
Great Sports Scores of 1969: Boston Celtics 4, L.A. Lakers 3
Just as the year before and in many years that would follow, the Lakers found themselves facing their nemesis, the Boston Celtics, in the 1969 NBA Finals. Although these teams often seemed easily matched, the Celtics have come out victorious on most of these clashes. The 1969 series was no exception, as, despite Laker great Jerry West’s MVP performance, the Lakers could do no better than push the series to seven games, and lost a close one in Game 7 as Boston won 108 to 106.
